Should You Invest in a New Design?

Did you know that there is much more to designing a website than just installing WordPress and putting in the content? You need to have a plan from the beginning to make your website cohesive and successful. If you find a developer or designer who hops into the development stage of the process from the beginning, you may not get the final result that you envisioned. There are seven stages to designing a website that I take for all of my clients: Research, Design, Development, Testing, Optimization, and Launch. Let’s jump into the first step, research.

Your Design is Outdated

A website’s design being outdated is one of the top reasons a website fails. There was a study done called Trust & Mistrust of Online Health Sites. The study required 15 people search online for health information related to them. After searching, they determine what factors influenced their decision to use one site over another. 94% were related to design, and 6% were related to content. Your web design will affect your users choice to stay on your website or to leave. It may also leave the wrong impression of you or your brand. Do you want your users thinking your brand is unprofessional or even outdated? If your design or layout is unattractive, then your users may feel that way. Humans like things that are new and fresh. Consider a person’s reaction when they look at a puppy or a baby. That is how you want your website to be viewed.

Design is Not Responsive

You may be asking yourself, what in the world does responsive mean? Responsive design means that your website will change as your device’s screen size gets larger or smaller. Did you know that having a responsive design can affect your search engine ranking? If you are looking at this post on a computer, I want you to do something for me. With your cursor, grab the right side of your screen over where the scroll bar is. Try adjusting the size of your browser window so that it is half the size it was. Do you see how this page automatically adjusts as you make it smaller? This is what your website needs to do. At the end of the 3rd quarter last year, 51% of internet users were on their mobile devicesHow many of those people were trying to use your nonresponsive site?

Your Site Just Doesn't Function Right

If you used javascript while building your site many years ago, I could almost guarantee your website is not working right. A few other common problems are, broken web links, a nonresponsive layout, or a site that takes too long to load. I have found the most common problem that clients have is a problem with their website taking too long to load. A good goal when it comes to site speed is to be under 2 seconds. That may not always be possible. You need to make sure it is under 6 seconds. If you want to test your current web site’s speed, check out GTMetrix. It is a free site tester that will tell you how quickly your website is loading.

Your site doesn't represent your brand

Another reason my clients opt for a new web design is that they feel their current site doesn’t represent them or their brand. If you designed your site more than a few years ago, there is a good chance that your website no longer represents you. The longer you are in business, the more your business is likely to change. As your company ages, much like humans, you will grow and develop. You may have changed names, logos, goals, or any number of things. Anytime you do this, you should update your website as well. Your website should be an extension of your brand and a valuable member of your team.

If you fix one or all of these things, I can almost guarantee that your website will perform much better. Your website should solidify your professional presence. If your site has an old design, is not responsive, doesn’t work, or doesn’t represent your brand, contact me for a free consultation. I will review your website with you and point out areas where we could improve one of the greatest assets of your team. Take your website to the next level and make it one of your most valuable resources.
